He lost his mother when he was just 14 years old and was left with his father and his siblings- a sister and two brothers. In 2012, Kelechi went abroad to secure a deal with Manchester City, in England, he signed a pre-contract agreement with the club, as he could not join till his 18th birthday in 2014. During this period, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) named Kelechi Iheanacho as the most promising talent in 2013. He travelled again to England to join Manchester City’s Academy, and by doing so he was allowed to join the club on a pre-season tour in the United State of America.

While in USA, he was able to score against Sporting Kansas City, and against Milan. Upon his return with Manchester City back to England, he was allowed to train with Columbus Crew until mid-October in 2014. He started playing officially for Manchester City in 2015, making his debut at the under-19 level at a UEFA youth league match, when he sustained an unfortunate injury.
